Evidenced Based Practices
Research shows that, when certain evidence-based clinical practices are applied, treatment is more effective and sustainable. Leslie Westfield, PhD & Associates PC utilizes various evidence-based treatment approaches that have been extensively researched and demonstrated to work for various disorders.
We utilize an eclectic approach to treatment as we understand that each individual is unique and every situation, problem and issue is not necessarily alike and we understand that one therapeutic approach does not work for all. Subsequently, we work with our patients and family (when applicable) to ensure the most efficacious treatment is provided based on identified problems, issues and needs. Our treatment recommendations usually include some type of psychotherapy (non-medication treatment) after your first appointment (if needed). Sometimes (but not always) when we are working on your treatment plan together we might decide a combination of treatments (non-medication and medication treatment) might be most beneficial. In these situations, we will work closely with your PCP or assist you in getting an appointment with an appropriate medical specialist (Psychiatrist, Neurologist, etc.) that will meet your medical needs.
Some (but not all) of our psycho therapeutic treatment approaches are described below.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on dysfunctional emotions, maladaptive behaviors and cognitive processes. We assist the patient in identifying current negative beliefs, evaluate how they affect current and future behavior, and attempt to assist the patient in restructuring their beliefs and change their outlook.
Psychodynamic Therapy focuses on past unresolved conflicts and relationships and the impact they have on a patient's current situation. In “social skills therapy,” patients are taught skills that help to build and maintain healthy relationships based on honesty and respect.
Problem Solving Therapy is used to assist the patient in defining their problems, develop viable solutions for each problem, and then assist in selecting, implementing, and evaluating the best solutions.
Supportive Counseling is used as a more general therapy that aims to get patients to talk about their experiences and emotions and to offer empathy without suggesting solutions or teaching new skills.
Behavioral Therapy is a therapeutic approach that is often used to encourage positive behaviors and decrease negative behaviors.
Behavioral Activation is an approach used to raise a patient's awareness of pleasant activities with a goal of increasing positive interactions between the patient and his or her environment.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy is a short and highly structured therapeutic using a various techniques including self help tools (such as workbooks) to focus on interpersonal issues associated with anxiety, depression and anger etc.)
Mindfulness is a therapeutic technique used to assist the patient in focusing their attention on the present emotions, thoughts, and physical feelings that they are experiencing at the moment. This technique has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress, improve self-control, assist in coping with urges to use substances, and prevent relapse.
Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) personalized treatment plan that addresses both mental health and substance use together in one setting, our clinicians provide the support to manage symptoms of both disorders simultaneously.
Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) is a non evasive brain stimulation that applies a small, pulsed electric current across a patient's head to treat anxiety, depression, PTSD and insomnia. CES has been shown to be as effective or better than the use of medication for individual's concerned about side effects of medications used for anxiety, depression, PTSD and insomnia.
